Body Gestures
- Pointing with lips – Colombians never point with their fingers. Instead, they pucker their lips and look with their eyes to indicate what they want you to look at.
- Wrinkling nose – If you’re talking with a Colombian and they wrinkle their nose, it’s their way of asking “What?”.
- Tapping neck with the side of their open hand (open palm facing body, touching neck with little finger) – This means “paila”. This word and gesture is usually used in negative circumstances. Example: “It’s raining today so we can’t go to the park. Paila.” It’s similar to saying “bummer”.
- Touching the end of the thumb to the end of the index finger and kissing it – This means “Te lo juro” or “I swear.” This is usually used when someone promises to do something.
- Shaking limp hand in the air – This means something serious and it’s usually accompanied with teeth bearing.
These are just a couple of the common gestures you’ll see on your Medellin vacation package, but don’t worry if you’re not an expert quite yet. You’ll surely learn more gestures and slang while you’re here! Colombians are very friendly, and they’ll be super excited to teach you more about their culture.
