The Municipal Government has given records and provided the necessary certifications for the people that are going compete in the different categories in the next edition of the next carnival of the Cozumel Island this year.
The intention for giving this certifications is to make it official, Henceforth, authorizing the candidates to start their fundraises, gather the community to participate in their parades, rehearsals and other activities for the realization of their activities.
In this occasion, the organizing committee solicited a series of documents and requirements for the aspiring candidates, and after a detailed background check, each person who presented a project was assigned after they fulfilled all the requirements. The press conference to show the official line-up and the dates for the pre-carnival and carnival on 2018, will be celebrated in the Municipal Hall of Quintana Roo, in the low level of the municipal hall.

The Carnival celebration in the island of Cozumel is a local festivity of the insular city San Miguel of Cozumel, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, it’s a tradition with over 140 years of presence in the region. Along with the Carnival of Campeche, these are the only carnival festivities that maintain the historic value of carnival celebrations in the Yucatan Peninsula, which makes it patrimony of the Quintana Roo state. This celebration is known for its rich cultural elements, it’s well planned logistics, its family friendly and its tourist friendly environment.
This event is recognized as one of the 8 carnivals in Mexico that are the most representative of the region. Other important carnival celebrations are in Veracruz, Mazatlán, Campeche, Mérida, Morelos, Tlaxcala y Oaxaca.
The Carnival in Cozumel has the support of the local government as well as the local community, thanks to the positive economic impact that it has on the region, not to mention that the festivities have become an icon of Cozumel’s cultural identity.
Around five thousand people participate on each event of the Carnival. They gather at the Palacio del Carnaval (Carnival Palace) –which is not a specific place but the venue designated for the event-.
The festivities last for almost an entire month since the celebrations include pre-carnival period. During the 4 weekends prior to the carnival, the city chooses the kings and queens of the festivities, whilst the aspiring participants campaign during this period. There are also galas or main events celebrated during these weekends.
The festivities climax on Martes Apoteosis or the Tuesday before Miércoles de Cenizas (Wednesday of Ashes). On this day, up to 80,000 people gather in the pier to enjoy the parade.
